Obituary for Ruth Arlene Notestine

November 6, 1913 - March 30, 2015
Buckeye, Arizona | Age 101

Ruth Arlene Notestine, age 101, of Buckeye, Arizona (formerly of Sturgis, MI) passed away on Monday, March 30, 2015.
She was born November 6, 1913 in Lagrange County, Indiana, to the late Charles and Hazel (Truby) Routsong.
Ruth graduated from Springfield Township High School, in Mongo, Indiana, in 1931 as one of 8 students in the class. She played on the girl's high school basketball team until the game was banned for girls in Indiana because it was considered too strenuous and physical. She grew up in Mongo, Indiana spending summers swimming in the Mongo dam waters with her brother and 4 sisters. She often shared that her most memorable Christmas gift as a child was a toothbrush. In the early 1930's, Ruth moved to Sturgis where she was employed by the Freeman Manufacturing Company as a garment fitter.
Ruth was married to Isaac (Ike) K. Notestine, her childhood neighbor and school mate, on November 24, 1938 in Lagrange, Indiana. They eventually bought a home in Sturgis.
Ruth was a member of the Mongo (Indiana) United Methodist Church and the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis which she joined on April 1, 1954. She was involved in numerous groups at the church heading the "funeral meals" group for a number of years. She was a founding member of the Sturgis Women's Club.
While Ike went to Italy during World War II in the army, Ruth worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant helping to produce the B-24 Liberator bomber.
Family and friends were Ruth's passion and delight. Hours and hours were spent playing pinochle with Ike and her sister Lois and brother in law Abe. She often hosted Christmas family reunions at her home in Sturgis. Her biggest joy, however, was raising their 2 children, Rita and Jane.
She is survived by her daughter, Jane (William) Dickey, granddaughter Mary (Michael) Palmer, grandson, Michael (Kelsa) Dickey, granddaughter Jill (David) Dickey Taylor, and grandson Richard (Tina) Way and great grandchildren, Ruth, Jacob, Nathan, Anne, Gabriel, Mimi Palmer and Stacey, Jonathan, Sophia Way. She is also survived by numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Rita N Good and son in law Joseph B Good, her brother, George Routsong and sisters, Lois (High), Retha Guilford, Esther Hunter and Wava Mills.
