Barbara L. Royer age 85 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Friday evening May 22, 2015 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis.
She was born April 20, 1930 in Dearborn, Michigan daughter of the late Ford M. and Opal T. (Robinson) Tinkham.
Barbara resided most of her life in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area and was a graduate of Burr Oak High School with the class of 1947.
On May 4, 1951 she married Richard L. Royer in Camp Carson, Colorado. He died December 9, 1990.
Barbara retired from the Littman Insurance Agency in Sturgis following over 30 years of dedicated employment as an agent. Before joining the insurance agency she worked in the offices of the Kirsch Company in Sturgis as a bookkeeper.
She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis where she served as a Deacon for several years in the 1960's. She also served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and as a member of the Worship and Music Committees.
From 1996 – 2002 she volunteered doing income tax preparation as a representative for AARP.
Barbara enjoyed driving motorcycles and snowmobiles, riding horses and dancing. She also enjoyed traveling and had traveled the world and throughout the United States. Barb had many interests and enjoyments but what she truly loved and cherished were special times with her grandchildren, children and son-in-law.
Barb is survived by two daughters: Debbey Keefer of Sturgis and Kim (Rich) Gorman of Rochester Hills; two granddaughters: Alexis Gorman and Ashley Gorman both of Rochester Hills and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son: Richard L. Royer, Jr.; three sisters: Betty Leonard, Patricia Smoker and Joyce Dale and one brother: Charles Tinkham.
In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Friday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331. A celebration of Barbara's life will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Michael Wicks will officiate. Private interment of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Royer's memory consider the Leukemia Research Foundation, 191 Waukegan Road, Suite 150, Northfield, IL 60093 or the Merkel Cell Foundation.
